Orlando Ballet's Katia Garza choreographed Steve Goldman's one movement piece for orchestra, Acadian Dances for the Orlando Ballet. The whole process was documented by Greig Powers and presented last night at the Orlando Film Festival. The title of the film is "Crossing Boundaries". I recommend this delightful short documentary. The arc of storytelling begins with Steve Goldman, the composer talking about the process of composing. It then moves to the challenge of choreography by Katia. The shooting of the ballet itself was nicely composed and edited. Katia's delightful personality and her energy and emotions translate beautifully onto this film. I feel like I know her a little bit after viewing this film. The hard work that goes on behind the scenes of the ballet world are so apparent. I loved seeing how Orlando's ballet troupe works and interacts, thanks to Greig Powers lenses. I also enjoyed seeing my friend Steve Goldman on camera and hearing him relate to the camera about his work on Acadian Dances and his process of composition. I know the piece well, and was present for the recording made by the Orlando Philharmonic.
I hope more such documentaries can be made. If only the hard work of these documentaries could make it to the Orlando public at large through cable, instead of limited showings at festivals. Orlando would enjoy learning more about the arts community around them and would surely become more involved after seeing them.
Hooray for the Orlando Film Festival! Free tickets to everyone is a cool idea!
