After looking at the score and hearing the realization of the work, he decided not to publicly perform Over the North Jetty. Though he liked many aspects of this piece, he was not comfortable with asking his choir to perform the hand against thigh sounds as called for in the score. Greg offered me a few choir directors' names who were accustomed to such approaches and suggested that I send the work their way.
Regardless that it would not be performed, Greg superkindly offered to have his choir read the work for me during a rehearsal this fall. I am very very grateful for this, and completely understand his decision. Being a choir director myself for many years, I respect his need to calibrate the many negotiations he makes with the many talented individuals he leads in order to achieve his sonic goals. Doing a work like this one was just a little too different.
He did offer me a slot in the Christmas program, though.....(!)
